Every year, the world pauses on International Women’s Day to recognize women whose courage, creativity, and leadership are shaping communities and inspiring future generations. In Nigeria’s growing gospel film industry, one such woman whose work continues to leave a lasting imprint is Opeyemi Akintunde.

Through storytelling, mentorship, and faith-driven creativity, Opeyemi Akintunde has built a remarkable legacy that bridges ministry, media, and youth empowerment. As the founder of Deep Thoughts Ministry International, she has used film, literature, and education to inspire transformation, address social issues, and raise a new generation of creatives who see storytelling as a tool for purpose.

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate her not just as a filmmaker, but as a visionary who has used her gifts to influence culture, strengthen faith, and empower young voices in the creative industry.

    Early Life and Education

Opeyemi Akintunde studied Mass Communication at Covenant University, where her interest in communication and storytelling began to develop strongly.

Her early creative journey started with writing. Over time, she became known for producing Christian novels that explored moral struggles, family values, and spiritual growth. What began as a passion for writing gradually expanded into filmmaking as she sought new ways to visually tell powerful stories.

Today, she is credited with writing more than 36 novels and producing over 150 films, making her one of the most prolific creators in Nigeria’s faith-based storytelling space.

    Building Deep Thoughts Ministry International

At the center of her work is Deep Thoughts Ministry International, a platform she founded to use storytelling as a tool for both spiritual transformation and social awareness.

Through the ministry’s film arm, Deep Thoughts Films, Akintunde has produced movies that address complex social and moral issues such as

    Family relationships and parenting
    Gender inequality
    Child abuse and societal pressures
    Faith, redemption, and moral responsibility

Her stories are known for combining emotional depth with spiritual lessons, making them both relatable and thought provoking.

    Breakthrough Films and Cinema Projects

One of the films that brought wider recognition to her work was Stepping into Maggie’s Shoes, a cinema release that explored family struggles and the consequences of personal decisions.

More recently, her production SOLD attracted significant attention. The film features gospel artists such as Mike Abdul and Monique, blending faith-based storytelling with contemporary culture to reach wider audiences.

Through these productions, Akintunde continues to demonstrate how Christian films can address real societal issues while maintaining a strong spiritual message.

Empowering the Next Generation of Creatives

Beyond filmmaking, Opeyemi Akintunde is deeply committed to creative education and youth development.

Through DT-Lighthouse Creative Academy, she has trained thousands of young Nigerians in skills such as

    Scriptwriting
    Acting
    Cinematography
    Video editing
    Creative storytelling

One of the academy’s most impactful initiatives is the Deep Thoughts Lighthouse Camp, an immersive program where children and teenagers learn filmmaking alongside spiritual mentorship.

This initiative reflects her belief that creativity is not just talent but a calling that can influence culture and shape the future.

    Recognition and Awards

Akintunde’s contributions to literature and media have been widely recognized. In 2023, she received the Legendary Author Award from Royal Ray International Authors in Nigeria.

The recognition celebrated her long-standing commitment to values-driven storytelling and faith-based media excellence.

    Personal Life and Shared Ministry

Opeyemi Akintunde is married to Pastor Akinwale Akintunde. Together, they share a passion for ministry, mentorship, and youth empowerment.

Their partnership reflects a shared vision of using creativity, leadership, and faith to inspire transformation in individuals and communities.

A Legacy of Faith, Creativity, and Influence

As the gospel film industry in Nigeria continues to expand, voices like Opeyemi Akintunde are shaping its future.

By combining storytelling, mentorship, and ministry, she has built a platform that not only produces impactful films but also equips the next generation of storytellers.

On this International Women’s Day, her journey stands as a reminder that creativity, when guided by purpose, can influence culture and inspire lasting change.

    Conclusion

Opeyemi Akintunde represents a powerful example of what happens when faith, creativity, and leadership intersect.

Through her films, books, and mentorship programs, she continues to inspire audiences while raising a new generation of Christian storytellers.

Today, as the world celebrates women who are making a difference, we honour Opeyemi Akintunde as a visionary filmmaker, a mentor to young creatives, and an icon of faith-driven storytelling.
